If you have an iPhone, you have all of the features that can be found in Apple's iPod with the added benefit of being able to make phone calls. But even if you do have an iPhone, call can be expensive depending on the tariff you are using.
Viber is a free VoIP app in a similar vein to Skype that can be used to send and receive free phone calls and text messages with other Viber users. The problem with any such app is that it is reliant on the people you need to get in touch with having the same app installed. This is true of Viber but it does have one big advantage. All that is required is the app itself; there is no configuration required and no need to build up a list of contacts.
Viber - Free Phone Calls & Text 8.4: Make and receive free calls and SMSs from your iOS or Android device.
When you place a call through Viber, you do so using your friends' regular phone number. There is certainly no denying that when it is working, Viber is a great app and provides a way of saving money on the calls you make. However, there are occasional problems with sound quality as well as random disconnections. It is difficult to complain about such problems when an app is free, but it does make it hard to rely on Viber as your primary means of communication.
For iPod and non-3G iPad users, Viber adds a handy calling facility to an already handy device while providing iPhone users with the ability to save a chunk of cash on voice calls and text messages. With an interface that is almost indistinguishable from the iPhone's usual phone 'app' Viber is a seriously useful tool that's worth trying out. What's New in Version 8.4 •Performance improvements and bug fixes to bring you the very best Viber experiences. Viber Media's response Posted by: Viber Media, 28 August 2011 13:01 Hi, This is a member of the Viber Development Team.
Thanks for this review of Viber. We're excited to see the great interest that so many people around the world take in our application. I'd like to point out that Viber is one of the VoIP apps that use the least amount of data during a call (roughly 0.5MB per minute).
In fact, this amount is planned to be significantly reduced soon, so our users can stop worrying about their data being spent:) On WiFi, of course, data is completely free. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate. Thanks, Viber. WhatsApp Messenger is the world's most popular instant messaging app for smartphones.
You can use it to send and receive text and voice messages, photos, videos, even call your friends in other countries, and because it uses your phone's internet connection it might not cost you anything at all (depending on whether you'll pay data charges). It's easy to set up and use. There's no need to create and remember new account names or pins because it works with your phone number, and uses your regular address book to find and connect you with friends who use WhatsApp already. You can talk one-to-one or in group chats, and because you're always logged in there's no way to miss messages. Even if your phone is turned off, WhatsApp will save your messages and display them as soon as you're back online.
Bad Shortcut Killer. There's plenty more (location sharing, contact exchange, message broadcasting) and the app is free for a year, currently $0.99/ year afterwards. What's New in Version 2.18.71 - Group admins can now choose to allow only admins to send messages to a group. Open 'Group Info' >tap 'Group Settings'. Non-admins will still be able to read messages and respond privately by tapping 'Message Admin'. - You can now easily notify people when you change your phone number. Tap 'Settings' >'Account' >'Change Number'. You can select which contacts or chats you would like to notify.
Viber is a popular free Voice-over IP messaging service and, that can be used on your smartphone or PC. The Viber PC client takes the convenience of the mobile app and brings it to your PC so you can stay connected even when you don’t have your mobile phone. It also makes it easier to get on with work and multitask while communicating with your contacts.
Viber competes with Whatsapp for the title of the most popular cross platform/cross device messaging service globally. A key difference between Viber/Whatsapp and Skype is that you can communicate with all of your mobile phone contacts that are also using the service – not just your skype contacts. Voice call, chat, send SMS, pictures and videos for free to any of your phone contacts who also have the app installed. You can even video call with up to 100 of your contacts at the same time! A simple UI tops off the package nicely.
The likes of Viber and Whatsapp have pretty much killed the traditional mobile SMS industry, thanks to their ease of use and ever improving data coverage. To use Viber on your Windows PC you will first need install Viber on your mobile phone (Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Symbian and Windows Phone apps available).
